Kia ora and welcome to The Beehive!
The Beehive is Elstow-Waihou School's very own new entrant classroom where the magic happens. In our classroom the focus is on creating a safe and welcoming classroom environment where we instill good old fashioned values and a life-long love of learning. We strongly believe in having a sense of humour and having fun while we learn. We are firm believers in learning through play and have built play-based learning into our daily classroom programme. This allows our akonga to explore their environment, refine their motor skills, exercise their imaginations and practise their social skills with their peers.
Alongside our play-based learning we focus on teaching the basic skills of literacy and mathematics and teach them well. With daily writing and reading we allow the children practise the alphabet and the letter sounds and show the children how to use and apply these skills in their reading and writing. Once children have started and settled into the class routines we start them on the early words programme where they work one on one with a teacher aide to learn the basic sight words they will need to give them a head-start in their reading and writing. Our school has a great enviroschool focus and alongside our classroom we have a vertical strawberry garden and our own small vegie patch that the children can interact with. We also provide plenty of different sporting opportunities for our akonga through our own swimming pool, class programmes and other sporting agencies such as Project Energise. We love our rural outlook and our connection to our place and the land.
